Fallen Friendships and Modern Politics

Our country is so polarized right now that it's one political group at the throats of another, and neither realizes just how hostile and threatening the other is. Both sides follow the take no prisoners and scorched earth policy, as each day the vitriol words escalate. Wow. And we have a mid-term election coming up? I can't see the escalations coming to an end any time soon. :(

On a quick side-note - liberals wonder how our President got into office? It was easy actually. All those voices that liberals silenced with their hate just went out and voted with their hearts. The hearts won.

So that takes me to my subject line. How can someone who has known my political leanings for over 20 years just out and out gut me? Easy. They swear at you, they denounce you in public, then they block you from their life. Weird thing? I haven't changed, our country has. All I can think is she was just as shallow and egocentric all the years I'd known her and I just didn't see it. Me bad.

My personal beliefs are to think the best of folks, giving all the benefit of the doubt and accepting them for who they are. My political beliefs I've had since I began voting - constitutional conservative. Nothing has changed. Okay, I did make a mistake once and voted for former President Carter. That woke me up to my own reality. ;)

So there are those out there who think that because of my political beliefs I'm a horrible nasty person - a fascist (okay - most millennials have NO idea what fascism truly is), a racist (oh yes, and that is because of my pale Celtic complexion don't-cha-know), and a traitor to our great American country. All because I don't believe as they do. Wow - just WOW. I can't believe that people believe like that. I've been unfriended, sworn at, maligned, and worse. Yet the hardest one to bear was when a friend (I've got the paper that said we'd be friends forever) gutted me.

Fortunately my real friends look beyond politics. We see each others heart, are there for each other, hold our laughter and tears close as we watch our world spiral. And what is happening in our world is nothing new. It has happened many times before with many other generations. It's just new to us.

So Pearl, no second chances here. I don't turn the other cheek. What is done is done and I only hope that Lady Karma doesn't bite you too hard as you go through the remainder of your life. BuhBye old friend. R.I.P.
