Big house go BOOM!
I counted 12 sirens screaming through the night down Portland Ave at midnight. They broke the strangely peaceful silence, but moved quickly. In the distance their compatriots echoed the wail as they converged at 42nd Ave and Park.
I ran into some neighbors when I was there to take pictures, and they said it had been a troubled house... and they didn't need to say more. It had been boarded up 3 days prior to the explosion. It had been hinted that perhaps the owners had had something to do with the big boom.
Cause 'undetermined' in explosion, fire that leveled house in Minneapolis
Investigators said this afternoon that they could not point to a definite cause for an explosion and fire that leveled a house in south Minneapolis early this morning, a fire department spokeswoman said this afternoon."The cause is undetermined at this time," said Kristi Rollwagen, deputy chief for emergency preparedness.
Fire damage is estimated at $200,000, she said.
When firefighters arrived they found the house, at 42nd Street and Park Avenue S., completely engulfed and went into "defense operations mode" to keep the flames from spreading to neighboring houses, Rollwagen said.
The neighboring houses were saved, but the vacant house was a total loss, she said.
Residents of the neighboring houses were evacuated and no injuries were reported.
Fire investigators remained at the scene all night. Investigators from CenterPoint Energy also examined the scene.
More than 25 firefighters responded.
